Our second field season in Antarctica on this project began in November 2005. Our goals this season were to:
  • sample each of our 11 plots (7 on stream shores, 4 on lake shores) twice - early and late the season
  • perform synoptic sampling and GPS survey of the wetted zone around the East Lobe of Lake Bonney,
  • execute a conservative tracer experiment in lakeside sediments,
  • perfrom extensive evaporation pan experiments at any camp we occupied
  • maintain datalogging stations at Lakes Joyce, Bonney, and Fryxell, adding soil moisture sensors to the thermocouple strings already deployed,
  • sample stream-side sites for an LTER intersite comparison project, comparing riparian soil microbiological communities in hot (Sevilleta) and cold (Dry Valleys) deserts.
  • execute 15N tracer experiments in mesocosms, and
  • perform 15N tracer experiments in microcosms to develop and demonstrate a stable isotope probing technique.

Study plots were re-visited and re-sampled at the following locations:
  • Lake Joyce, north shore
  • Lake Bonney, south shore
  • Lake Hoare, south shore
  • Lake Fryxell, north shore
  • Priscu Stream (E end of Lk. Bonney), above Bohner Stream tributary
  • Green Creek, west shore, below F9 stream gauge
  • Lower Delta Stream, just above F10 stream gauge
  • Upper Delta Stream
  • Lost Seal Stream (southern tributary, near Commonwealth Gl)
  • Upper Onyx River, ~400 m above LWRT stream gauge
  • Lower Onyx River, ~300 m above Bull Pond
Samples from all sites will be analyzed for biogeochemistry, water content, size fraction, water extracted will be analyzed for stable isotopes of deuterium and 18O, and molecular microbial analysis.

The samples taken during the circumnavigation of the east lobe of Lake Bonney will be used to determine water content and sediment size fraction. Combining this data with wetted zone dimensions and local topography, we will assess the landscape controls on wetted zone dynamics. We will analyze this data in conjunction with the same data collected from Lake Fryxell last year to determine the landscape scale controls on the variability in the extent of these wetted zones.
